Modern Techniques Home School Kids

Here are some strategies brought to you by experienced home schooling parents. Try using some of them to create a fulfilling learning experience, for you and your kid.

1 – It is never too late to change the curriculum
Yes, you can even do it mid-way in the academic year. Sometimes you might pick books for a course from your favorite publishers or you might buy a packaged curriculum only to find your child does not like it. Don’t hesitate to change it and sell it when you realize it is not working. Get feedback from other parents who are home schooling their kids. Explore online and go for curriculum resources with high ratings and good reviews.

2 – Every child demands different educational approach
One of your kids might be more of the kinesthetic type while the other would learn better visually. Figure out the strengths of your child. For instance, a kid learnt names of American states and capital while skating with his father, in a day. The same kid if told to sit down and learn would have taken probably 10 days because it would not have interested him.

3 – Cover most of the syllabus in the morning
It is better to teach in mornings. It is the freshest time and children can pay more attention to what is being taught to them. It allows you to say focused on what you are teaching. Covering most of the work in morning leaves the kid enough time to go play or work on a project and frees you to do household chores.

Chores for Pre-School Kids

When your young child is ready to learn, teach him to:

Brush his teeth.

Dress by himself.

Put his toys away.

Make his bed with your help.

This means you must take time from your busy schedule to teach your child what he needs to know. Avoid trying to speed things up by doing his chores for him. If you take over his chores, he won’t achieve a sense of competence. He’ll become weak and you’ll become stressed. He needs to depend on himself for the chores he can do.

One more thing, avoid being picky. When your young child does pretty well, accept his efforts. Don’t complain about every little thing unless you want tantrums and tears. Instead compliment him on what he does well, “Joey, you pulled the covers off the floor. Good for you.” If the pillow is messy, ask him, “What do you think you could do about the pillow?” Let him straighten it. Praise him again with, “Good job, Joey. It looks great!”

Competence in young children is the “I can do it myself” attitude. This is an important quality for building character and self-esteem.

How to Get Your Child to Do Chores:

I used positive chore charts to motivate my boys. I also gave allowances.
Some of you may be against allowances. That’s fine. I viewed allowances as helping my boys learn how to spend money wisely. If they bought candy, it was soon gone. If they saved their money like Heidi did in her money jar, they could spend it on something of value or pay me to do their work…just kidding.
Why not build a sense of competence in your boys and girls with age-appropriate chores? Start when they are pre-school age. If you do, you’ll be building self-esteem and character too.

Avoid Bad Habits in Kids

Avoid Punishments

Always make yourself ready to educate your kids towards maintaining good habits which are good for their health. Never go for taking steps if you have less control over your anger. As, you are in anger you may punish your kid or exhaust your frustration on your kid, resulting misconceptions in your kid mind which will be really ineffective not only for your kid but also for your whole family. Be calm and feel relaxed because kids are in the age of growing, so give them maximum time to develop clear and positive ideas about everything.

Give them Confidence

Confidence is one of the bases of personality development of your kids. They need confidence from their elders at every stage of their life. So giving confidence also works here when you need to guide and teach your kids to avoid bad habits. Probably, it is the easiest way to teach your children.

How can you give them confidence? There are different ways like letting them taking their part in family matters which you think they should be involved in. Keep a very friendly behavior with kids, be frank and make best efforts to eliminate their hesitations. Steps like these make your kids always agreed with your opinion. Hence, you can easily guide your kids to avoid bad habits which are necessary for their health and growth.

Alternative Choice

Some kids are too consistent in their bad habits and really reluctant to avoid them. In such conditions, it is hard to control yourself. But instead of wasting your energy on such frustration, let your mind to take initiative to get a solution. You may suggest an alternative choice to kids which will work on both sides. It will let your kids avoid that bad habit and at the same time it will raise the passion about good habits which is good for their health and growth. For example your kid consistently spreads pencil colors on house walls and in spite of your efforts he is constant with spreading colors. Rather than frustrating, encourage him for drawing and painting and if he shows interests then also arrange an equipped space for drawing and painting.

Awards and Gifts

Never stop your efforts to make your kids healthier and educated. If they also follow your instructions then reward them with gifts and encourage them to be more educated. Remember, awards and gifts may lead your kids on both positive and negative tracks. So, awards and gifts which you decide to buy for your kids must be positive for their health and growth.

Learn to Stop Kids Lying

Kids lying problem is a bit tricky because it appears on different levels in children behavior. But there are different things you can do to help your child get rid of this behavior:

  • Don’t give your child a chance to lie. In other words, don’t ask what you already know. If your child obviously took a cookie even though he wasn’t allowed to, don’t ask: “Did you take a cookie?”. You’ll push your kid to lie. Just say: “You have chocolate smears on your mouth. I told you not to take a cookie and you did it anyway without asking me!”
  • When your child lies to you and you know he does, don’t get angry, you’ll make your child lie more. The fear of your angry reaction is exactly the reason why your child is lying to you. Listening and keeping your voice down is very important to understand the causes and be able to help your child stop lying. It’s also a better way to get the truth.
  • Kids lying to draw attention by making up stories have to be handled differently. Indeed, very imaginative children shouldn’t be neglected. You need to make the difference between reality and fiction very clear. You can take TV and books as examples of what is real and what is pretended. Also, it’s a good idea to set aside times for imaginary play with dress-up costumes and accessories to differentiate fiction from reality without bridling his imagination.
  • It’s important that you make truth and honesty a major principle in your family and education. Kids lying by habit often over-predict their parents’ reaction. That is why it’s very important that you provide clear boundaries but insist on the fact that they are negotiable and that it’s always better to tell the truth rather than a lie in the long run.
  • Give your child the chance to reconsider his answer after saying an obvious lie and tell him there will be no consequences if he tells the truth right now. Reward honesty. Reverse the process: if you “catch” your child telling the truth, he’ll be rewarded with something he likes doing. He’ll soon see the good consequences of being honest.

Improving Reading Skills of Kids

· Make a habit to listen audio tape as you travel with your kid in car. In this way, you can teach your kid to listen to the book and he may like to read the book later on.

· If your kid has less time for reading long tailing articles, you can encourage him to read short and brief magazine.

· Attend parents meeting with teachers and discus with teachers how to improve the reading skills of your kid. Arrange reading instructor if needed.

· If your kid is close to pass middle schooling, you should be more careful towards his reading capabilities. This is the time when your kid has to change his schooling subjects into reading and so it is crucial period. If your kid is less keen in reading then his schooling studies will be suffered too. Start to play your role and encourage your kid to read books of his interest which probably increase the chance of reading other books too.

Stimulate the Passion for Reading

· Allow your kids with a monthly expenditure just for books reading. It will also help your kid to understand that you give importance to reading.

· Visit libraries regularly with your kids and bring weekly magazines which can enhance the passion for reading in your child.

· When you are going to present gifts and rewards to kids, consider books instead of toys or clothes.

· Make sure that the bookshelf is in the central place from where it is easily accessed by your kids.

· Keep chatting with your kids about famous books and specially those which encourage your kids for reading. Ask about books which their friends read and then encourage your kids for those books too.

Control Anger Among Kids and Parents

First we should be able to develop a skill to control our own anger that will bring satisfaction in our life and boost our potential to manage things. It will first alert us that we are going to be angry. Observing our body reaction will tell us better:

· Are you losing patience?

· Are you breathing too fast?

· Does your face get red?

These signs will tell that a feeling of anger is nearly enforced on us. Now try to control this feeling by deep breathing, by talking to yourself or change the state of motion. Or, you can also communicate to yourself through words which can be relaxing.

Anger will be always a reaction to the event we face for example taunt, doubts or an unsuccessful discussion. It may also be a result of deficiencies we have or when our desires and needs are not fulfilled. Unfortunately, instead of focusing and realizing them we start looking on other people who are enjoying the same. It causes more desperation and then we start getting angry. It may cause various problems which will be not positive for our personality.

Next is how to control the situation when our kid is behaving too aggressively? First, try to ensure the protection of everyone who is playing his role in the situation. Then after ensuring the protection of everyone, carefully observe his angry feelings, try to conceive the truth which angry kid has in his heart. Now show a positive reaction which can control the situation effectively.

For younger kids, it often works and also filters their mind from inappropriate thoughts. Younger kids are not too difficult to handle especially if they realize that we care and respect them. For others who are having constant behaviors may require calming techniques mentioned earlier.

Keep a friendly relation with kids, participate in their entertainment time like guide them which book is more entertaining for them. For example there are comic books which is a good resource for educating kids for many of their concerning matters. Comic books for kids like Batman comics, Superman comics, educational comic books, also you can buy medical comic books for giving diseases awareness for kids.

Kids For Homework

  • Make a schedule of homework time and strict to that time. You better know about your kid’s interest to for doing homework. So make sure that the time you set for homework is sufficient and according to kid’s interest.
  • Try your level best to keep the attention of your kid high. Turn off your TV and other entertainment programs. Avoid noisy sound and cellular calls however a call to friend to ask about home assignment will work in certain cases.
  • Kids must do their homework themselves or if they don’t they will never exceed in their educational life. Don’t worry if they do mistakes again and again. Give them proper support and right directions so that they can develop a skill to avoid mistakes.
  • Keep a check on your kid’s studies and school activities. Get yourself involved in their quizzes, exams and assignments. Make sure that your kid is fully prepared for the next day before sleeping.
  • Stand yourself as an exemplary personality that your kid can follow. Have you ever develop a habit of reading before your kids? Or have you share a story with your kids? Such habits encourage your kids towards reading.
  • Always appreciate the kids by saying “Well done” or by patting gently on his shoulder. Also share his achievements with your family members and relatives which will bring high confidence in your kid’s personality.
  • Keep having discussions and meeting with your kid’s teacher and share your thoughts and suggestions which help to improve the skills of your kid.

Make Kid Enjoy Cleaning

1. If the Dad cleans, the kid cleans – It is universally accepted, I don’t know for what reason, that cleaning is Mommy’s duty. Even the new born knows that. He pisses and looks at mommy to clean the mess. What does Daddy do? Cuddle the child when clean? Actually, in many homes, daddy actively participates in creating mess around. As Daddy so is the kid. When you ask your kid to clean, he/she will give an immediate answer ‘Even Daddy is not cleaning. Why aren’t you questioning him?’ It is very obvious that kids look up to their parents and especially daddy. When the man of the house participates in cleaning voluntarily, the child will follow him without a doubt. What do you say?

2. Instead of ordering, join them in cleaning – Many a times we end up saying ‘Do this’ and ‘Do that’. Sometimes it does irritate our kids. C’mon they are kids and they need to be treated as kids and not as adults. When you order, the kids will do the work but will never enjoy doing it. This makes the cleaning process a difficult ‘chore’ in the house. Instead, if you join hands with them in cleaning saying ‘let us clean the car today’, not only is the work done, but also you connect with your kid and give a comfort feeling to them. This increases their trust and confidence in you and they will know for sure that Mommy/Daddy will be there during tough times. Child Psychology!

3. Give them reward – Reward works in any field and with any age group. But unless it is not becoming more of a bribe. There is a huge difference here. When you start bribing your kid for doing their job, the kids will know and strongly feel that ‘If I do this work, I will get that’. That’s it. There is no fun, no commitment. Just business. It might work few times, but if you continue doing this, it will affect your relationship and the attitude of the kid. He/She will think everything as a business. No respect for love and affection can be expected in future. Instead, you make the reward more fun oriented or reward them with their favorites. One of my friends rewards her son with a penny for every job done satisfactorily. He puts it in a cookie jar and when the jar is full, he is taken to his favorite hangout place with 2 of his friends. He gets to choose them too. It is a small jar, so they end up going at least once a month and he chooses different friends every time. Wow! What a fun! This made him enjoy his chores. He loves doing it.

Kids Room Dividers

There are many uses for a kids room divider. There are single panel and multipanel kids room dividers. Single panel kids dividers are used mainly for educational purposes and make a perfect activity center for the kids since they come with interesting features like bookshelves, whiteboards, art easels or chalkboards. This helps to kindle the imagination of a child and help them to write, draw or paint on the divider. There are many educational kids dividers like tri-panel room dividers with write-n-Wipe dry erase surface, read and write room divider which combines a writing area with book storage, see-through easel room divider with paint caddies, 3 way maxi mirror divider and much more.

The next type which is folding multi-panel kids dividers can help in dividing a large kids bedroom into two portions to clearly define a playing and sleeping area. They can also help to add privacy when the bedroom is shared by two or more kids. Organizing a kid’s bedroom also becomes easier with a room divider as it provides storage areas. When a kids room divider is kept against a wall, the area between the divider and the wall could also be used for storing toys and other kids stuff.

Finally, these kids room dividers can also be used just for decoration and to brighten up the kids bedroom with their lively colors and with the kids’ own artwork. Dividers with colorful dinosaur artwork and mirrors would keep little kids engaged in playing for a long time.

Kids Decals Make Learning Fun

First on the list of helpful kids decals, are chalkboard stickers. If you haven’t heard of these, you’re missing out! These are one of the newest inventions when it comes to wall decor. Instead of having bulky chalkboards, you can now buy chalkboard decals! These decals are made of strong but thin, flexible vinyl. They’re reusable and removable and stick to any clean, smooth surface. So your imagination is truly the limit. They aren’t just stickers for walls either! You can apply them to refrigerators to help you and your kids keep track of schedules and appointments through the busy school year. You can stick them to the top of your pre-schooler’s desk to encourage their practice of penmanship. Your tween or teen may find them helpful to apply to their lockers at school.

Chalkboard stickers come in all shapes and sizes. You can purchase chalkboard panels and put them in separate places or position them all together to form one gigantic chalkboard! There are fun shapes, like animals, buses and circles for preschoolers and for tweens there are guitars and fancy designs! What kid, no matter how old they are, wouldn’t think it’s super cool to write on the walls?

If you’d prefer to avoid the “mess” of chalk dust, then the dry erase panels and sheets would be perfect for you! Again, like the chalkboard stickers, these dry erase boards are made of that same wonderfully flexible but durable material. They are, as well, removable and repositionable and come in all different shapes and sizes too. Both the chalkboards and whiteboards are easily cleaned with a damp cloth. You can use regular chalk or dry erase markers on them, no special writing tools are needed.

Here’s a fun fact to tuck away in your brain for both the chalkboard and whiteboard kids decals. You can cut any of these products to whatever object you desire! Say you’re putting up a chalkboard decal in your son’s room that’s decorated in cars and trucks and anything with engines and wheels. Using a pencil or pen, you can trace an image of a car or truck onto the backing of the decal (before you peel it off the decal). Then carefully cut out the shape, peel it off the silicone backing, stick it to the wall, dresser, door, wherever and enjoy!

New designs and products are coming out all the time. One of these super cool items are the Dry Erase Photo frames. These are not as organizational in nature… but still very cool for the teen going off to college or for your tween that’s looking to pimp out their locker at school! Dry Erase Photo Frames kids decals are sold in a pack of three and include “tacks” and “tape” kids decals. Simply frame your friends and fav places with these special frames. Then write a funny caption or title for each image.

A great benefit to both the chalkboard and whiteboard kids decals is that they’re very economical and earth friendly. If you’re family is anything like mine, we go through a LOT of paper. Whether it’s making “To-Do” lists or the kids doodling their hearts out, we are certainly not saving any trees in our house with all the paper we use. By strategically placing these decals around the house, families could seriously cut back on the amount of paper that they go through. As well, my son, who is four, loves to practice his letters. By placing a fun chalkboard decal in his play area, I can still encourage this activity but be friendly to our earth as well!

The last group of kids decals that make learning fun are the many different styles of number and alphabet wall stickers! Because these kids decals are removable and reusable, your toddler and pre-schooler can use these fun and colorful to learn their ABC’s and 123’s. They can peel off the objects and match them to the letter they start with. Like move the elephant beside the “E” and so on. This is fun, interactive and a great way to encourage learning and stimulate their imagination. You can use them to teach colors and positions as well. “Which letter is Red?” or “Which object is Bigger?” or “Which object is Below the letter?”. You get the idea. The ways you can use these cute kids decals is vast.
